Northern hardwoods bound this stand to the east and south on the slopes of the ridge. We walked up the southern slope, which has a dense understory of young spruce. Trailless and roadless part of Mon. Forest.;Vigorous stand of multi-aged red spruce and yellow birch with spruce understory. Complex hummocky microtopography of moss-covered decaying down wood. Ridgetop stand, quite extensive. Second growth, probably not logged since 1910. Abundant birch snags probably date to succession following logging. As old spruce in subcanopy were released, and new spruce began to grow and crowd out birch, birch die-back may have released new layer of young spruce.
Representativeness
